What Happens on Interview Day at a German Research Institute

From the institute tour to the closed committee conversation: a walkthrough of a typical shortlist visit.

A shortlist visit at a Max Planck, Helmholtz, or Leibniz institute often runs longer than a corporate interview day. You may give a research talk, meet potential collaborators, tour labs, and sit with a hiring panel that includes both scientists and administration.

The research talk is judged for clarity under time pressure as much as for novelty. Practise a version that leaves five minutes for questions you can actually answer well, rather than packing every unpublished figure into the slides.

Informal conversations with group members are not small talk. Panel members later ask how you listened, whether you asked about infrastructure, and whether your collaboration ideas were specific. Prepare two or three concrete questions about equipment, PhD supervision norms, and travel budgets.

Closed committee interviews frequently probe conflict: authorship disputes, failed experiments, and how you would staff a small group with limited funding. Answer with examples, not slogans. Committees in Germany value candour about constraints.
